Category Archives: 5. West African Wander: Taking it on the Road
At some point during the restoration stage Laura and I will begin to use the vehicle to explore parts of Ghana and the neighbouring countries. This will take the pressure off our poor 2005 Subaru Legacy, on which we have had to replace a good part of the undercarriage in the year and a half since we arrived here. Then when our posting ends in July or August of 2012 we will ship most of our belongings back to Canada and depart Ghana overland in the Defender in the general direction of Morocco. It is of course really the journey that appeals to us and provides the inspiration for the whole project. Burkina Faso, Mali, Senegal, Mauritania and Morocco offer some pretty wild and interesting roads that penetrate well into the Sahara. We have done a preliminary itinerary that easily spans two months, more if we add Liberia, Gambia or Sierra Leone.
